This article is about Seroquel for bipolar disorder.

How does this work?

Seroquel is an antianipressant that works by affecting certain chemicals in the brain, which can be helpful for bipolar disorder and other mood disorders.

Seroquel is available as 25 mg tablets and 25 mg extended-release (AR) tablets. The standard dosage of Seroquel for bipolar I disorder is 5 mg once daily in a single dose.

Seroquel is not approved for use in children with a major depressive episode (MDD), because of concerns about side effects. However, many patients are still taking the 25 mg dose as an alternative to Seroquel for bipolar disorder.

The standard dosage of Seroquel for bipolar disorder is 5 mg once daily in a single dose, but some patients are also using 25 mg as an alternative to Seroquel for depression. Although Seroquel is not a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder, it can be helpful for bipolar depression because it causes a person to have mood swings that are different than usual. For example, if someone is feeling very depressed, it’s not easy to tell whether they are depressed, depressed again or feel extremely depressed. If people are feeling very depressed, they may not feel depressed for a couple of days.

If people feel very depressed and have trouble falling asleep, it may be helpful to take Seroquel a few times per day for several weeks. It is important that the person take the medication at the same time each day for the first few days. If they do not feel very depressed and do not fall asleep, they should take the medication at bedtime.

Patients are also being evaluated for their risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in the past 6 months, so it is important to follow up with the doctor about the next scheduled dose of Seroquel. This could be a few months or years after starting the treatment.

The FDA approved Seroquel in 2003 for the treatment of Bipolar Disorder. The drug was approved for use in adults and children. It was also approved for the treatment of depression in children, with the exception of bipolar disorder in which the drug is used in adults and children.
